The B52's didn't have to travel very far to take on the British
Amry Blades for the return match of a game abandoned a few weeks
earlier. So they couldn't blame jet lag when things started badly! The Blades
controlled the puck from the first face off, moved it around the attacking zone
crisply, pulling the B52 defenders in all directions, until Jones found himself open a
few feet out and put the puck past the outstretched glove of Munson, after just 35
seconds! The Army team were well organised and continued to have the run of the play, only
hard work, luck and some good saves were keeping the B52's in it. Luck ran out at 11:40, B52
old boy Rob Taylor scoring after shooting through the legs of a B52 defender and Munson to make it
2-0. Ian Shambrook would get a goal back 1:53 later, chipping the puck over the Army netminder from
close range after a scramble in front. Despite the Army having more of the play, the first finished 2-1.
With everything to play for, both teams put everything into the second, with the Blades continuing to have the edge
and put shots on Munson. He seemed up the task after a lacklustre performance in his last game, until 27:10, when a
shot was deflected, then rattled around Gibsons skates, before breaking out to Watley and with the goalie out of position
after the deflections, he was easily able to score. The rest of the period was a very close battle, with the Army continuing to
edge it in terms of possesion and shots.
Into the third and the match continued in the same way, the Army having more of the play and both teams working hard. It was
the B52's that would get the next break through, a coast to coast drive by Tony Nix ending in a well deserved goal at 52:04. With
the score at 3-2 and plenty of time to play, the B52's sensed their chance, but were then guilty of being too attack minded. With
the Army on the attack, the B52 forwards didn't back check hard enough, leaving men open and eventually Potter was all alone
and his shot got through Munson to put the Army back two goals ahead just a minute after the B52's goal. The Army always
had an element of control after that and finished off the game 4-2 winners.
